Most spiders are not poisonous and like warm, dark places. In homes, they frequent wall cracks, corners, air vents, and the area beneath shingles and eaves. They're also found in wood piles, under stones, and on leaves. They are active at night, searching for insects to eat. The black widow and brown recluse spiders are poisonous. Jet black and hairless, the widow has a distinctive red hourglass marking on its stomach, while the recluse has a violin-shaped mark on its head. Bites can cause severe reactions and sometimes death.
